On May 16, 2023, Gold Hill Patrol Officers were dispatched to the area of N. Nevada Avenue and Cimarron Street to investigate an assault. The victim of the assault was transported to a local hospital. The Colorado Springs Police Department Assault Unit investigated the assault and arrested 40-year-old James McGinley for Assault in the Second Degree.
On June 24, 2023, the victim of the assault succumbed to his injuries while in the hospital. He was identified as 52-year-old Michael Smith, of Colorado Springs. While the Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death, it is being investigated as a homicide. Mr. McGinley’s charges were amended to include the charge of Manslaughter.
This is the 15th homicide in the City of Colorado Springs in 2023. At this time last year, there were 28 homicides investigated.
