Identity of Homicide Victim and Suspect Arrested

On Sunday, May 7th, 2023, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Murder in the first degree for 21-year-old Donnell Chess regarding the deceased male.

On Monday, May 8th, 2023, The El Paso County Coroner’s Office completed the autopsy of the deceased male, who has been identified as 20-year-old Ja’lyn Tyre Lagrue, a resident of Colorado Springs. While the Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death, Mr. Lagrue’s death is being investigated as a homicide.

Also on Monday, May 8, 2023, detectives with the Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force (VOFTF) arrested Donnell Chess without incident.

This is the 8th homicide in the city of Colorado Springs in 2023. At this time last year, there were 19 homicides investigated. A photo of Mr. Lagrue has been provided by the family.

On Sunday, May 7, 2023, at 1:34 am Officers were in the area of 2727 Palmer Park Bl. when they heard multiple shots fired coming from the parking lot. A dark color sedan was seen leaving the area and a pursuit was initiated but was later terminated. Officers returned to the scene and found one adult male to be deceased and one adult female suffering from gunshot wounds. The female was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. At approximately 2:00 am an adult male also walked-in to a local hospital seeking treatment for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Detectives from the Violent Crimes Homicide Unit responded to assume the investigation.
