Abstract:The commodities needed for survival and maintaining human life likely have been derived from minerals. This is true for all metals such as copper, iron, gold, aluminum, etc., and many other commodities such as diamond, potash, and uranium. In recent years, we are experiencing a change in the mix of sources of energy required for sustainable development and growth of our lives and society. In the post-COVID era, we stand at a point where we experience the need for the development of mining operations for extracting commodities, which are extremely important for human lives to sustain in foreseeable future. However, as we geologists know, the minerals containing all these metals/commodities are distributed worldwide in a non-uniform manner and their occurrences are entirely controlled by the geologic history of the world. As an example, gold deposits occurring in Nevada are different from the gold that occurs in Utah and different from those in Tanzania or, India. Also, we find occurrences of aluminum are restricted to only a few countries: India, Brazil, Guinea, Australia, etc. In my view, this diversity in the geological nature of the mineral deposits provides an opportunity for nations to work together for making access to various metals readily available through the development of the mining industry. The development of the mining industry worldwide requires expertise in many different areas of geosciences such as exploration, geochemistry, structural geology, etc. This presentation focuses on the mineral industry. However, this is also true in other industries.
