DURANGO, Colo. – For the second-straight week the Fort Lewis College softball (10-17, 8-12 RMAC) team is headed to Denver, Colo., for a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series. This week the Skyhawks will challenge conference powerhouse Metropolitan State University of Denver (23-8, 19-1 RMAC) in a Friday/Saturday slate.
Friday's doubleheader has been moved up to an 11:00 a.m. start time while Saturday's will remain at 11:00 a.m. as well. Live statistics and a live broadcast will be free on the RMAC Network courtesy of MSU Denver Athletics.
LAST TIME OUT
The Skyhawks are fresh off of its third series split of the season after going 2-2 at Regis University against the Rangers (16-14, 13-7 RMAC) last weekend. Fort Lewis hung tough through the first game, holding Regis to a 4-4 game until the Rangers walked it off in the bottom of the seventh inning on an FLC error. The Skyhawks offense kicked it up a notch in game two, and the hot bat of Izzy Giroux helped edge Regis 6-5.
In game three, Catheryn Rodman was the hero with a two-run bomb in the eighth inning that broke the shutout and lifted FLC past RU 2-0. An impressive complete-game shutout from Vanessa Candito (2-2) secured a 6-0 victory for the Rangers in game four to force the series split.
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
MSU Denver currently sits second in the conference standings following a series sweep over Black Hills State University (4-16, 4-16 RMAC) last weekend at home. The Roadrunners outscored the Yellow Jackets 38-5 in the series, tallying 50 total hits while holding BHSU to just 16 total hits.
The Roadrunners have won 20 of its last 22 matchups and swept four of its five conference series. With a pitching staff that boasts a 3.16-team earned run average that holds opponents to a .260 batting average, it's no wonder MSUD has outscored opponents 210-114 this season. Leading the Roadrunners in the circle is Jenna Medhus. A five-foot-five freshman, Medhus ranks among the best in the RMAC at third in ERA (2.34), fourth in wins (9), and third in walks allowed (13).
Offensively MSU Denver boasts nine individuals with at least a .300 batting average and .822 on-base plus slugging percentage. Leading the marathon of Roadrunners is outfield Shelby Robb. Robb, a junior from Arvada, Colo., joined the MSUD lineup at the start of conference play and has been electric at the plate ever since with a .437 BA while leading the team with 10 doubles, five triples, and four home runs. Kami Grammerstorf, Hannah DiFabio, and Miah Hartvigsen have all provided at least 30 hits this season as well.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Skyhawks will open an eight-game homestand next weekend welcoming Black Hills State for a four-game RMAC series. Games are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Apr. 1-2, with 12:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. start times respectively.
