Air Force senior Texas Tanner has secured a return to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships for the second consecutive year. According to the national selection committee, Tanner will compete in both the shot put and weight throw events at next week’s meet in Arkansas.
Tanner enters the championships with strong credentials, holding Air Force records in both events. He is ranked second nationally in the weight throw with a distance of 24.18 meters (79 feet, 4 inches) and tied for ninth in the shot put with a mark of 19.83 meters (65 feet, 0¾ inches). Tanner is one of only three throwers nationwide to qualify for both throwing events at this year’s NCAA Indoor Championships.
Last season, Tanner became the first male thrower from Air Force to qualify for the indoor championships. This year, he joins Shelley Spires as only the second field athlete from Air Force to earn repeat qualification; Spires competed in the high jump during the 2016-17 seasons.
The Mountain West champion and current Air Force record-holder is scheduled to participate in the weight throw on Friday, March 13 at 4:00 pm Central Time and in the shot put on Saturday, March 14 at 1:00 pm Central Time.
