On Sunday, April 30, 2023, at 12:10 AM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Stetson Hills Division, were dispatched to the 4800 block of Carefree Circle South regarding a single-vehicle traffic crash. When officers arrived on the scene, they determined that a vehicle was traveling west on Carefree Circle South when the driver lost control of the vehicle, the vehicle left the north side of the roadway and struck a light pole and a tree before coming to rest. Once officers and medical personnel were on the scene, it was determined that the passenger from the vehicle would be transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the vehicle driver was deceased on the scene. Due to the nature of the crash, the Major Crash Team was contacted and responded to assume the investigation. It is still early in this investigation; however, speed and alcohol are considered factors in this traffic crash.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy of the deceased driver. The driver was identified as 20-year-old Colorado Springs resident Christian Murillo. This is the 19th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this same time last year, Colorado Springs had 13 fatal traffic crashes. In the past 365 days, there have been 62 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.
