Mountain West Conference recently issued the following announcement.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – No. 1 Nevada and No. 3 New Mexico will square off in the 2022 Mountain West Men’s Tennis Championship match on Sunday after both teams won their semifinals matches Saturday at the Air Force Academy Outdoor Tennis Courts.
New Mexico upset No. 2 Utah State, 4-3, in the first match of the day. The Lobos rallied back from a 3-1 deficit by winning the final three singles matches.
Nevada took down No. 4 San Diego State, 4-1, in the second match. The Wolf Pack won the doubles point and went 3-1 in singles play.
The title match begins at 1 p.m. MT on Sunday, May 1.
No. 3 New Mexico 4, No. 2 Utah State 3
- New Mexico rallied back from a 3-1 deficit by taking the final three singles matches. The Lobos went 4-1 overall in singles play.
- Freshman Jan Pucalka clinched the match for the Lobos, rallying back to win at No. 4 singles over Felipe Acosta 2-6, 6-0, 7-5.
- Utah State won the doubles point by rallying back with wins at No. 1 (Zarkovic/Cierny) and No. 2 (Ninteman/Ruiz).
No. 1 Nevada 4, No. 4 San Diego State 1
- Nevada swept doubles play, earning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 (Azkara/Prieto) and No. 2 (Maggs/Pucalka) doubles.
- The Wolf Pack went 3-1 in singles singles play, earning wins at No. 3, 5 and 6 singles.
- Senior Delmas N’Tcha won at No. 3 over Victor Castro 6-4, 6-3 for the clinching point.
