Law enforcement agencies from the Pikes Peak region gathered this morning for the 20th Annual Ken Jordan Awards Ceremony, which recognizes outstanding efforts in DUI enforcement. The event was attended by Sheriff Joseph Roybal of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, as well as representatives from the Colorado Springs Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Manitou Springs Police Department, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Colorado.
The awards honor the memory of Ken Jordan, a Colorado Springs Police officer who died in December 2006 during a traffic stop involving an impaired driver. His death continues to highlight the dangers faced by law enforcement and underscores the importance of addressing impaired driving.
Nominees for this year’s award included Officer Travis Hanable and Officer Sean Parker from the Colorado Springs Police Department; Trooper Alvaro Acuna and Trooper Christopher Helland from Colorado State Patrol; Deputy Chad Johnson from El Paso County Sheriff’s Office; and Officer Michaela Robertson from Manitou Springs Police Department.
El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal stated: “I want to thank this year’s nominees for their critical service and unwavering commitment to keeping drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians safe across the Pikes Peak region. Our Traffic Unit and Patrol deputies work proactively—day and night, including weekends and holidays—with a strong focus on DUI enforcement.
“For years, El Paso County led Colorado in traffic fatalities, but through coordinated education, enforcement, and prevention, those numbers have steadily declined. Our message to drivers remains clear: stay alert, follow traffic laws, and never drive under the influence.
“Congratulations to this year’s nominees and award recipients and thank you to the Pikes Peak DUI Task Force and our law-enforcement partners for recognizing these deserving professionals.”
Colorado State Trooper Christopher Helland received this year’s Ken Jordan Award for Excellence in DUI Enforcement.
Rebecca Green, MADD Colorado State Director, commented: “The Ken Jordan Award ceremony reminds us behind every traffic stop and every DUI arrest is a commitment to saving lives. These nominees represent the very best of impaired-driving enforcement in the Pikes Peak region. Their dedication honors Officer Ken Jordan’s legacy and sends a powerful message to our community: impaired driving is preventable, enforcement matters, and lives depend on it. MADD is proud to stand alongside our law-enforcement partners as we work together to end drunk and drug-impaired driving in Colorado.”
