The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has taken part in the national Flag Sojourn 250 campaign, an initiative marking the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence on July 4, 2026. The campaign is organized by the National Flag Foundation (NFF), America250, the National Sheriffs’ Association, and the County Sheriffs of Colorado (CSOC).
Flag Sojourn 250 involves a single American flag traveling across the globe and throughout the United States to honor two and a half centuries since the nation’s founding. The journey began on June 14, 2025—Flag Day—at a ceremony hosted by Vietnam Veterans of America. At that event, representatives from the National Flag Foundation presented the flag to members of the American Battle Monuments Commission. Over a year-long period, it visited all 26 American military cemeteries in ten countries as well as U.S. territories in both the Pacific and Atlantic before returning to the United States on October 8, 2025.
With support from national law enforcement organizations, including sheriffs’ associations at both state and national levels, the flag is now making its way through various states ahead of its final destination in Washington, D.C., where it will be formally presented to America250 Committee during ceremonies for Independence Day in July 2026.
In Colorado, sheriffs from across all counties joined together for a commemorative event at the State Capitol recognizing this segment of Flag Sojourn 250’s journey. Members of El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard participated in yesterday’s ceremony by standing in tribute to both the flag and those who have served under it.
Sheriff Joseph Roybal commented: “It is a privilege to stand with our fellow sheriffs, veterans, and community partners in honoring this historic journey of the American flag. This sojourn represents the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of generations of Americans who believed in the promise of freedom. As this flag travels across our nation, it serves as a powerful reminder of how our shared history binds us together and the American spirit of freedom and perseverance endures.”
