El Paso County Sheriff’s Office identifies woman who died in custody after hospitalization

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office announced on Mar. 12 that a 35-year-old woman, Meika Tucker, died in custody after being hospitalized for medical treatment.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Tucker was receiving care from medical staff at the El Paso County Jail on Friday, March 6, when it was determined she needed additional medical attention. Paramedics from AMR arrived around 1:15 PM and transported her to a local hospital under the supervision of a sheriff’s deputy. She was admitted to the hospital upon arrival.

Despite advanced care at the hospital, Tucker’s condition worsened and she died at approximately 11:34 PM that evening. The Sheriff’s Office has identified her and extended condolences to her family and friends during this time.

Sheriff Joseph Roybal has ordered an in-depth investigation into the incident. The Investigations Division of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will conduct this inquiry following established standards for all citizens of El Paso County.

An autopsy has been completed by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, but officials are awaiting toxicology results before determining the final cause and manner of Tucker’s death.
