The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office announced on Mar. 24 that deputies arrested a wanted individual with the assistance of a first responder drone and a K9 partner following an incident on March 22.
The arrest is notable due to the use of technology and specialized units, which helped locate and safely apprehend suspects who were believed to be armed. This approach reflects law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to increase safety for both officers and the public during high-risk operations.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 10:15 PM to a residence in the 1200 block of Millbrose in unincorporated El Paso County after receiving information about the possible location of Toree Wayne Cole Spikes, age 28. Spikes had an active warrant for First Degree Assault with a Deadly Weapon related to an alleged March 20 incident involving a fire extinguisher. The victim in that case sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
Deputies established a perimeter around multiple trailers and vehicles on the property after learning that Spikes might be armed. The search involved members of both the K9 Unit and drone operators from the department. Before law enforcement arrived, Spikes reportedly fled on foot but was later found hiding nearby by a drone operator who located two individuals in an open field.
With support from K9 Dex, deputies contacted both individuals, who complied with commands and were taken into custody without incident. Spikes was booked into El Paso County Jail on charges including First-Degree Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Harassment; his bond is set at $50,000.
A second person identified as Kolby Beaver, age 34, also had an active warrant for Theft and Shoplifting. Beaver was booked into jail as well with bond set at $2,800.
