The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office announced on Mar. 31 that a Pikes Peak State College instructor has been arrested and charged with dozens of counts related to alleged sexual assault of a minor student.

Authorities said the case began after the Regional Communications Center received a call on February 17, leading to an initial investigation into reports of inappropriate sexual contact between an adult male teacher and a minor. The Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit then launched a formal inquiry into allegations involving sexual assault on a child by someone in a position of trust.

Investigators determined that Jason Gunderson, age 48, engaged in what they described as a sexual relationship with the minor student for more than one year. According to officials, Gunderson used his role as professor and community connections to manipulate the victim. This manipulation reportedly included promises of prestigious internships, providing special attention, and altering grades so the victim would receive high marks on exams.

Gunderson was arrested at his home on March 27 and booked into the El Paso County Jail. He faces 77 counts of Sexual Assault on a Child by One in a Position of Trust. The Sheriff’s Office stated he is being held on $50,000 bond.

Officials have not released further details about the ongoing investigation or whether additional victims may be involved.
