El Paso County investigates death of jailed woman after hospitalization

A 35-year-old woman who was in custody at the El Paso County Jail died after being hospitalized on March 6, 2025. According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, medical staff at the jail determined she needed additional care and arranged for her transfer to a local hospital around 1:00 PM.

Paramedics from AMR arrived shortly after and transported her to the hospital, where security was maintained by a sheriff’s deputy. The woman was admitted to the hospital, but her condition worsened despite advanced medical efforts. She died at approximately 11:34 PM.

The cause of death is currently unknown. “Our Office extends condolences to the individual’s family and friends during this difficult time,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.

Sheriff Roybal has ordered an in-depth investigation into the incident. “The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division will conduct the investigation in accordance with the same standards we provide for all citizens in El Paso County.” Additionally, Sheriff Roybal has requested an autopsy from the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

Formal identification of the deceased as well as determination of cause and manner of death will be made by the Coroner’s Office.
