El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal has implemented Stage II Fire Restrictions across all unincorporated areas of the county, effective February 16 at 1 p.m. The decision comes after discussions with local fire chiefs in the Pikes Peak region and an assessment of current weather conditions and ongoing dry weather.
Sheriff Roybal stated, “The current conditions create an extreme risk for wildfires which can spread rapidly and threaten lives, homes, and critical infrastructure. As the County’s Fire Warden, it is my duty to protect life and property for our citizens. Stage II Fire Restrictions are necessary to reduce the risk of human-caused fires and to ensure the safety of our residents, visitors, and first responders. We appreciate the public’s cooperation during this critical time.”
Under these mandatory restrictions, several activities are now prohibited in unincorporated El Paso County. Open burning—including campfires, warming fires, charcoal grill fires, and wood-burning stoves (with some exceptions)—is banned. The sale and use of all fireworks are also not allowed. Outdoor smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles or buildings only. The use of explosives is similarly prohibited.
Some activities remain permitted if specific safety requirements are met. Residents may use fireplaces or wood-burning stoves within buildings. Gas-fueled appliances such as stoves or fire pits are allowed only in developed campgrounds, picnic grounds, or private residences if they use liquid propane (LPG), natural gas, or other liquid fuels; these appliances must be used in a cleared area at least three feet from flammable materials, with flame lengths not exceeding two feet and a quick shut-off mechanism present.
Outdoor welding or torch operations—referred to as “hot work”—must occur in a space cleared at least 30 feet in diameter with a dedicated fire watch equipped with immediate access to fire suppression tools.
Violating these restrictions may result in fines up to $1,000 per incident.
Residents are advised to monitor the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office website and local media for updates on fire stages and restrictions. Sheriff Roybal will continue to assess local conditions and adjust restrictions as needed.
