Capt. Sid Tomes has been named assistant coach for the Air Force men’s basketball team for the 2025-26 season, according to an announcement from head coach Joe Scott. Tomes, who graduated from the Academy in 2020, played four seasons with the Falcons between 2016 and 2020.
After graduating, Tomes served at Fort Meade, Maryland, with the 75th Intelligence Squadron. There he led cyber defense operations supporting global missions. While stationed at Fort Meade, Tomes also worked as an assistant coach at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., under coach Stephen Turner. During his three years there, Gonzaga was consistently ranked among the top ten high school teams nationally. The school’s 2024-25 team achieved a 29-5 record and won the DCSAA State Championship. Nine players from that team went on to play Division I college basketball.
Tomes continued to participate in competitive basketball by playing in the Goodman Summer League in Washington, D.C.
Before his assignment at Fort Meade, Tomes was stationed at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California with the 65th Cyberspace Squadron. He contributed to establishing one of the first operational cyber missions within the Space Force.
As a player for Air Force, Tomes started for three years and served as co-captain during his senior year. Over his career he scored 537 points and recorded 200 assists across 110 games. In his final season he averaged six points and just over three rebounds per game while ranking second on the team in assists. His free throw percentage of 84.6 percent led Air Force that season and is tenth-best all-time for a single season at the Academy.
Tomes grew up in Woodbury, Minnesota and played high school basketball at East Ridge High School under Paul Virgin where he earned several all-conference honors. Basketball runs in his family; his sister played college basketball and his father played professionally in Germany.
