The Air Force men’s tennis team lost to No. 72 Utah State, 4-0, in a Mountain West Conference match on March 29 at the USAFA Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Falcons now have a season record of 6-10 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
This match marked the third consecutive time Air Force faced a nationally ranked opponent. Utah State swept the doubles matches to secure the first point and then won three singles matches in straight sets to clinch the victory.
In doubles, Air Force lost at No. 1 by a score of 6-1 and at No. 2 by a score of 6-4. In singles play, Utah State recorded wins at positions one, two, and five without dropping a set. Several other singles matches were unfinished when the result was decided; Matthew Staton had just split sets at No. 6 when his match was abandoned, while Jack Brown led by a set at No. 2 and Langdon Tingleaf held an advantage in his second set before both their matches were stopped.
Head coach Evan Urbina said after the match: “What a battle against Utah St today. They played some of the best tennis on our home courts I’ve seen from a visiting team. I was proud of the fight back after doubles. Jack was serving for the match, Langdon was about to split, and Matt had just split. Our team continues to compete well. On to the next one at home next weekend. Go Falcons!”
Air Force is scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 3 with another home match against Oral Roberts.
