The Air Force Falcons men’s swimming and diving team secured a 176-86 win over Seattle University at the Redhawk Center on Friday, January 16. The Falcons achieved eight individual victories and two relay wins during the meet.
Head coach Rob Clayton commented on the team’s performance, stating, “The guys swam well tonight. The win was highlighted by double winners Tyler Surratt, Jordan Falls, James Winterfield, and Tanner Wilson.”
The meet began with a victory in the 200 medley relay by Dylan Ferguson, Bridon Rosales, Tanner Wilson, and Jordan Falls with a time of 1:30.38.
Tyler Surratt won the 1000 freestyle in 9:24.36. Tucker Rice finished second at 9:28.35 and Ralph Fiscus took third at 9:41.00. Surratt also placed first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:31.79; Evan Witte (4:39.02) and Rice (4:40.53) completed the top three.
James Winterfield earned first place in the 200 freestyle at 1:39.19, followed by Matthew Doty (1:40.28) and Camden Swigart (1:40.55). Winterfield also won the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.40.
In breaststroke events, Tanner Wilson led Air Force in both distances—winning the 200 breaststroke at 1:58.63 ahead of Brandon Cho (2:00.55), and taking first in another event with a time of 54.11 as Bridon Rosales followed at 55.42.
Jordan Falls won the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.21; Joe Christ (45.54) and Winterfield (46.19) finished second and third respectively.
Team captain Danny Detjen recorded Air Force’s highest finish in the 200 butterfly by placing second at 1:50.02.
Falls took second place in the sprint-focused 50 freestyle with a time of 20.70; Christ finished just behind him at third place with a time of 20.71.
Freshman Matthew Doty secured first place in the individual medley (200 IM) at a time of 1:49.27 while Swigart was runner-up at 1:51.04.
Louie Body posted Air Force’s best result in backstroke events by finishing second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.56; Ferguson came third (1:49.64), Kennedy fourth (1:50.99). In the shorter distance backstroke event, Ferguson placed third at :50:.58 seconds.
The Falcons closed out their victory as Winterfield, Christ, Surratt, and Swigart won first place for Air Force in the concluding event—the men’s relay—finishing their leg of competition at three minutes two point eighteen seconds to score eleven points for their team.
Coach Clayton added about his athlete’s achievements that night,”Wilson’s two pool records in his hometown fans set the tone for the Falcons.I am very pleased with our progress from a week ago.”
Air Force is scheduled to compete again on Friday January 23 against BYU and Colorado Mesa in Provo, Utah.
